B Useful Software
I’ve created a browser extension called BlockUSM to serve as a website blocker that can also remove only certain elements from social media sites (e.g. feeds or shorts/reels) and prevent websites from appearing in search results. It’s available for Chrome and Firefox (including Firefox for Android). Other apps or extensions provide these functionalities, but BlockUSM combines them into one easy-to-use extension. I’ve given other useful software below. All are free unless specified otherwise.
Browser Extensions
- LeechBlock NG: A fully-featured website blocker available for most browsers.
- ivBlock: Port of LeechBlock NG for Safari
- uBlacklist for Chrome, Firefox, Safari: Blocks websites from appearing in search results
- SocialFocus: Blocks distracting elements of social media. (e.g. feeds or shorts/reels). Works out of the box on most major social media platforms
Desktop Apps
- Cold Turkey: Downloadable website blocker for windows/mac. Because it is an app rather than a browser extension, it’s harder to disable, but only basic features are free.
